5 things which make me hate my Nokia 5800

I love my new Nokia 5800 and it quickly became my primary phone contrary to Symbian-Freak. Yet, there are things where the little red devil just drives me crazy and makes me wanna throw it into a bucket of holy water.

Here are five things, which make me hate my Nokia 5800:

  1. Access point group handling is not even consistent in the built-in firmware
(Sometimes it asks for the group to be used, sometimes it does not offer groups.)
  2. UI rotation is random at best and needs to be tilted in unnatural ways
(E.g. if I put it down on the table it goes to landscape.)
  3. No application support. Download! contains 15 applications only
(Many apps are being updated, none of them is in the catalog.)
  4. Connecting to new WLAN requires canceling the auto-search and refresh manually
  5. When writing an SMS, I have to choose between phone number and e-mail address.

Luckily, all of these are software related, so I just need to wait for the firmware update :-)

Same problem, voice commands stopped working about 1 week after getting the 5800, even using the in car bluetooth kit, I tried to go to 'device updates' - 'Check for Updates' in phone management but its asking create new server profile, anyone know what the settings should be?
  • voice command just fails now. dunno if its the firmware upgrade or what not. it worked before. probably can be fixed by a hard reset. anyone care to try?

    RE: Ahmad's comments-

Do you have all of your contacts copied to the phone memory? I have just discovered that voice activation will not work on contacts which are stored on the sim memory.

I am having the same problem with the voice commands, were you able to fix it?

Dougy D, try holding the green button for voice commands.

I am having problems with my Nokia 5800 with voice dialing. First of all i cant open voice commands at all. Second is i can receive a call on my bluetooth ear pice and if i dial from the phone too, But for some reason it stopped me being able to push the button on the ear piece and saying a contacts name?
On a whole its a great phone but the voice commands and dialing are essential. Please can anyone help me? I have hard reset it 4 times and still the same problem......Dougy D
  • Have you noticed that voice dialing in the 5800 has gotten worse? VOice dialing is something I have increasingly used on the N95, and its one of several reasons that I won't buy the iPhone. But I was surprised that the voice dialing was acting weird on the 5800. Some names which never were recognized on the N95 suddenly worked fine in the, but.. many names which were easily recognized on the n95 are nearly NEVER get recognized on the 5800. Has anyone else have this problem?
  • Hi Ricky, thanks for visiting! It's great that sms, mms and email is integrated now, but the mandatory extra step is not my favorite, I should say :-)
  • Great list, and now I see what you mean about the Destinations support. I'm also annoyed with FP2+ in having to choose between phone and email when sending an SMS.

How does the Voice dialing or voice commands work.. about the same as the n95?
  • Thanks Apocalypso - yet, I need to do it for each of my contact, who have one number + an email. Previously, it needed to be done only for contacts, who had more numbers :-)

Of course, it's not a problem, which makes me get rid of the phone, but it is really annoying :)
  • At least you can't get the rid of choosing the number when you are sending message by setting default number for contacts that contains multiple entries.

    Hope that helps,

    regards,
    Teo
