How does it feel to be a Nokia fanboy?

An impeding doom is upon me again. As a Nokia fanboy, I love so many things about my precious little phones. The 5800 is specifically loveable. It is however full of not hated, but definitely not loved things. If I think about my choice of phones and the company behind them, I can’t help the despair.

Erase and rewind

Yes, it’s a start of a new year, which according to our built-in clock is the time for erase and rewind, summing up the past year and making plans for the new one. My current plans are questionable. I decided to blog about my hobby – Nokia mobile phones – in October. I knew (hence the name of the blog), that it is not an easy ride with Nokia – it is joy and sadness in one. But should it really be?

Thank you, but

I mean, look at the great things Nokia did and still does. Look at the N95, which changed the market totally and set the Convergence into stone. It was the living proof that it can be done, a major engineering victory. All hail the N95, but…

But with Nokia there is always a But. Should I love Nokia because of their great history? Should I love their R&D department or their engineers? But then should I hate their product managers? Or the whatever department, which tests the phones? Who screwed up the N95?

Who did not realize, that the almighty convergence device does not have a battery, which can support all the functionality in the phone? Or the processor to avoid any lag? Or the PIM (Personal Information Management; consisting of the calendar, todo etc.) hasn’t seen an update in 5 years? The 15 million N95 devices sold are nice, but shouldn’t it be sold 40 million times instead?

Wake up call

The 5800 is a loveable device, but it has an outdated PIM, Music Player, standby screen, application catalog, clock and camera software. It has become my primary device, but I’ve lost many things in the process. So many things, that it makes me wonder, if I will be able to continue with my plans through 2009.

Will I be blogging about my love for Nokia devices one year from now? Or will I break after a dozen phones from competitors bring innovation, which Nokia is not even able to copy quickly?

Who and when will wake up Nokia and keep all the fanboys proud?

I hope nokia takes a look at the hardware on some older devices to see if fp2 will work. Seeing how nokia tests their devices, im sure it at lease crossed their minds, one would hope.

I should move to the UK, since there is alot more offered to that region :) That and the killer Volkswagens that are there too :)
  • Hi Joe! :-) It would help a lot in customer loyalty if Nokia would push more functionality down to "oldar" models - if the hardware is capable of taking it.

With the 5800 in the UK, there are promising signs, 5 carriers will pick it up at the same time (30th January). I'm hoping that with the right devices, Nokia will be in a better position in bringing full-feature phones to US carriers also. (Which would mean acceptable pricing ;-)

Its going to be interesting what Nokia does for this year. Im hoping for product integration, and maybe more mid/high end devices. The 5800, N97 and others are way beyond my budget. It would be nice to see them get these devices to carriers ( of course rebrand afterwards) So more people can afford them. While I gave up for a firmware update for my 95-3 (it works great so I dont feel the need) it would be nice for the ability for recent devices to get FP2 on them. I want to upgrade to another Nokia when the time comes, but some days I wonder if its worth it :(
  • @Micky: my faith is in Nokia - that's why I'm a fanboy very much. But some days, I would be glad with no surprises, just the baseline working :-)

@Nemoi: yes, there are some great things coming (HD video, Point and Find, Ovi Services etc.), I really look forward for 2009. But it would be good if Nokia would be faster and different departments would talk to each other :)

Well, I think it's better to keep a healthy level of criticism than to become an uncritical fan that lauds everything that comes out of Espoo or Cupertino or Redmond or whatever...
Nokia makes some amazing products, and some great mistakes. They experiment a lot. And that is what makes it interesting.
  • I hear you. Nokia have some great surprised in store for 2009, you just wait and see my friend.
