Oh, My God! 300 million Ovi users are coming!

Repeat after me. Three hundred million users. The population of the US in 2006 was 300 million. It is also Nokia’s target for it’s services – which are planned to reside under the Ovi umbrella brand.

Nokia targets its Services & Software business to have 300 million unique services users by 2012.

Forget nagging Nokia to announce it’s target for 2009 for Ovi. As Nokia is insisting of finishing (???) Ovi first, before pushing it, we will not see a huge jump before summer. My own estimation is about 0,5 – 1 million Ovi (mostly Share) users by the end of 2008, around 30 million by the end of 2009 (mostly the Mail on Ovi and Maps on Ovi users, future N97 owners and converted My Nokia IDs), 100 million registered (!) users by the end of 2010 and 100 million users in each year after.

How big is 300 million?

To understand how far behind Nokia is currently and how ambitous is the goal, let’s look at some other services and social sites:

To summarize, 300 million is as big as the top web players today. While Nokia has been criticised many times recently for its slow turning of the mothership, the arsenal pointed at the Goliaths of today is shaping up to be breathtaking – and not at all resembling yesterday’s sling.

  • @Texrat: yes, driven by Mail on Ovi, emerging markets will provide the numbers. I just wish Nokia would have a counter on the Ovi website, showing the number of users.
  • I believe those 300 million users will mostly come from places like India and China: http://tabulacrypticum.wordpress.com/2009/01/06...
  • @Snowy: thanks for the link, I don't know how I've missed your post in December. I'll drop you a longer answer in email as it hardly fits into a mail ;)

@mobiledan: like the small boats idea :) Competition serves too many punches, while Nokia is still turning...
  • While I chuckled at the high number, in my house alone there are 3 users, mostly for share and sync...

I like that it is opening up to other then N & E series... A quick glance lists quite a few...

I think that a turning of the ship, would also be putting small boats in the line of fire to slow down the attack though...

Hey Renegade Fanboy, enjoyed your article and site very much.
I like the points you made across, also i would like to comment on one of your comments,

"I think Ovi Sync should be pushed today"
"The most non-tech usage of Ovi is the Backup functionality. This should be pushed today with each device. If Nokia waits for N-Gage and Music and Maps and … it will not be prime-time before end of 2009. In one year, someone else will come up with a killer implementation and leave Nokia in the dust."

I completely agree. I wrote a topic with similar views, which became a headline over on Symbian-Freak.com http://www.symbian-freak.com/forum/viewtopic.ph...

"Nokia has around 50% loyalty rate, which means that 150-200 million users are new to Nokia every year! In 4 years, that’s 600 million new users - plus the estimated billion users today. It’s not impossible."

In my article it speaks how they should make a change with their approach to use the advantages they have as you mentioned(but i dont think i used certain numbers to back myself up or a specific idea as you have). It's just like they have their new users tossed in the wind, with out catching on to them, Today.
  • Hi Sloan, you summed up quite well - why not? :-) Many times we keep thinking about high-end N-Series users only. But if I look at Mail on Ovi or Maps - that could give alone a 100 million users.

Nokia has around 50% loyalty rate, which means that 150-200 million users are new to Nokia every year! In 4 years, that's 600 million new users - plus the estimated billion users today. It's not impossible.

Just as 40% seemed very distant years ago - yet Nokia has achieved it! :-)
  • After using Ovi now for some time I think it has the potential to be something great. I use it almost daily for either uploading my pictures or planning out the day. 300 million sure why not?
  • Hi Nemoi, this is where I actually disagree :-)
I think Ovi Sync should be pushed today - and not waiting for N-Gage, Music and other fancy things.

The most non-tech usage of Ovi is the Backup functionality. This should be pushed today with each device. If Nokia waits for N-Gage and Music and Maps and ... it will not be prime-time before end of 2009. In one year, someone else will come up with a killer implementation and leave Nokia in the dust.

I already use it quite reguarly, but mainly Ovi Sync. This way I can have one calendar both privately and at work. For me the most important step before starting to recommend ovi to non-tech users is the unification of the account system. Once that works with ngage and nokia music, it should be ready for prime time.
  • Hi Cj, I'm actually happy, that they have announced a goal, I think it is the first mandatory step. The next one would be a goal for 2009 - and then outlining the project phases and steps :)

I don't think it's too optimistic. It's reachable. But Nokia needs to smoothly run 2009 for it.

If I would work for Nokia, I would choose 50 million as a target for 2009:

  • Eeesh. Well atleast they've set a goal lol. A very very optimistic goal.
